Using email to get your first 100 subscribers

When I was in my early 20s, I got in a money pinch.

I was broke.

About to get married.

And I was desperate.

I vividly remember talking with my granddad about how to fix my problem.

His answer was “There is a good place to go when you are broke. Work!”

Talking about being broke wasn’t going to help me.

Theorizing about how I could make money wasn’t going to help me.

The only solution was working 18-hour days for the next 6 months.

And that is the position you are in right now…

You have no list.

So it’s time to go to work.

Getting your first 100 subscribers requires manual labor.

The most effective way to jump-start your email list is by inviting as many Eager Sneezers as possible to join your list (i.e. your inner circle of friends, family members, co-workers etc.).

Over the course of the next 5 lessons, we are going to focus on getting people you already know to subscribe to your list. Then we are going to get them to refer their friends (who are directly interested in the topic you are focusing on) to join your list as well.

In this lesson you will do 3 things….

  1. Go through the last 200 emails you have sent.
  2. Create a list of (at least) 25 of those 200 people who are most likely to support you.
  3. Invite everyone from that list to join your email list

Here is a template you can use:

[first name],

Hope you’re having a good [dayoftheweek].

Quick note…

I’ve started up a new project where I’ll be writing a new blog post on [insert your industry here] every week. Thought it might be something you’d find interesting.

Want in?

- [your first name]

PS: [insert a personal note]

Here is what that might look like in real life:

Uncle Allan,

Hope you’re having a good Monday!

Quick note…

I’ve started up a new project where I’ll be writing a new article on business strategy every week. Thought it might be something you’d find interesting.

Want in?

- [your first name]

PS: [insert a personal note]

Note #1: Every time you get a positive response from someone, simply write their name and email down on a piece of paper or use the simple tracking spreadsheet in the resources below. Don’t worry with any software or websites at this stage. (We’ll take care of that stuff once you hit your initial goal of 100 subs.)

Note #2: Don’t worry about the weekly promise we are making here. As soon as you hit your goal of 100 subscribers I’ll show you a super-simple way to start fulfilling this promise. For now, focus on getting your first 100 subscribers.
